Every day hundreds of millions of people around the world practice Tai Chi, a gentle
but powerful exercise that integrates mind, body, and spirit. Tai Chi is an ancient
art form that is part exercise, part self-defense, and part meditation. This “life-
time exercise” cultivates inner stillness and internal focus while exercising all of
the major muscle groups of the body and providing powerful health benefits. The
inner calm within the movements improves the flow of “qi” (chee), the vital life

The human race has been dancing since we lived in caves. Early man fulfilled a need for self expression with hectic gymnastics. Gradually we acquired grace and rhythm through an accompaniment of sound effects such as sea shells, hand clapping, and foot stomping. Soon the drum was invented and we began to dance in earnest.
Primitive man celebrated all of life's milestones from birth to death with dance.
As civilization developed, so did dance. Murals depict ancient Egyptians dancing; Biblical p…

Hello Everyone!
Our class is progressing and I want to say a special thank you to those who have returned from last session. We're pushing pretty hard in there but you all are amazing!
I'll have some recipes this week for some great (and yes, healthy) soup that you can enjoy with or between meals. With the holidays approaching, it's important to keep your stress levels down by staying active, eating right and avoiding temptations (OK, you can have a little). See you in class.

I usually forget and have to scrub, scrub, scrub, but if you coat your hands well with vaseline or a gardener's balm type product, its much easier to clean all that sappy goo off your hands when you have completed your holiday masterpiece. I especially like Burt's Bee's gardener's friend hand salve. Badger balm makes an effective product too. Both of these seem to coat the hands better than vaseline which makes your hands slippery and for me, makes me prone to dropping things. You'll also be les…

Several folks in October's floral design 101 were asking about a class in silk design, so we are responding! Look for the class in the spring 2010 catalog. The format will be similar to previous classes with lots of tips and demonstration, and guidance making a piece of your own choosing that will compliment your home. As usual, I'll try to incorporate practical stuff that will make it easy and easy on the budget! In other words, I'm cheap, so I'm always looking for ways to re-use things and sti…

The next Introduction to Ballroom class begins Thursday, November 19th at 7:30. This will be a lively course as we introduce the Hustle and New Generation Swing.
Hustle, of course, is from the disco era of the 1970s and helped make partner dancing popular again. It is danced to contemporary or disco music with 28 to 30 measures per minute. The dance consists of the lady spinning while the man draws her close then sends her away. Hustle is a member of the Swing family of dances.
New Generation…

We will begin a new session of classes at the Intermediate Level on November 24th at 7:30. These classes will feature Samba and Paso Doble.
Samba is the national dance of Brazil. It was first introduced in 1917, but was not accepted as a ballroom dance until 1930. Carmen Miranda is credited with introducing Samba to the US in 1939. Samba is danced in 2/4 time with the American Style having more "bounce" than International Style Samba. American Style Samba is also danced to a faster tempo than it…

Trying to find a dance instructor? Here are some tips on finding the right person to teach you to dance.
There are the obvious things to look for, of course. Is the teacher certified by a national dance organization or have other dance instruction credentials? What sort of teaching experience does the instructor have? Is the price right? Are the dances you want to learn being taught by this instructor?
Once the obvious questions are answered, try looking at how that instructor's students dance…

It might not seem like it yet, but cooler fall weather is right around the corner. Plant cool weather herbs like parsley and cilantro now to enjoy through fall and winter. One of the best benefits of growing parsley now rather than in the summer is that you don't have to contend with swallowtail caterpillars in the winter! They ate my parsley plants down to nubs overnight last week.
Arugula, which can be used as a salad green or as a seasoning herb, also grows well in cool weather. Arugula will…
